Helsingør sits 45 kilometres north of Copenhagen on the narrowest point of the Øresund — close enough to Sweden that you can see Helsingborg’s roofs across the water. The drive up takes about 50 minutes via the E47 along the coast, longer if you stop at any of the harbour towns on the way (Vedbæk and Rungsted are worth the small detour).
The main draw is Kronborg Castle, the Renaissance fortress better known to the English-speaking world as Hamlet’s Elsinore. It is a UNESCO site and is genuinely worth the visit. Beyond the castle, Helsingør is also the most popular gateway to Sweden — the 20-minute ferry to Helsingborg leaves every fifteen minutes and is the cheapest border crossing in Scandinavia.
Other reasons we drive this route: the Maritime Museum (designed by Bjarke Ingels, built into the old dry dock), the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art on the way at Humlebæk (one of the best art museums in Europe — easy to add as a stop), and the seaside lunch spots along the Strandvej.
From central Copenhagen, the most common route is the E47 (Helsingørmotorvejen) directly north — fast and reliable, about 45 minutes in normal traffic. The slower coastal alternative on the Strandvej (Route 152) adds 20 minutes but gives you the harbour-town string: Vedbæk, Rungsted, Humlebæk, Snekkersten. Couples and tourists often prefer the coast road on the way up and the motorway on the way back.
Fixed price from €99. Door-to-door from any Copenhagen address to any Helsingør destination. Standard 15 minutes of free waiting time. Stops at Louisiana or other coastal points can be added at booking. The V-Class works well if you are a group of four to six visiting the castle together with bags.
