Roskilde sits 35 kilometres west of Copenhagen — about 35 minutes via the Holbækmotorvejen. For a thousand years it was the capital of Denmark before that title moved east, and the place still carries the weight of it. Roskilde Cathedral is a UNESCO site and the burial place of forty Danish kings and queens. The Viking Ship Museum on the fjord is the other big draw, with five eleventh-century longships preserved indoors and a working boatyard outside.
Day trips for the cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum, and the lakeside walks around the fjord. The annual Roskilde Festival in early July is the other reason — for the festival run, we recommend the V-Class or Sprinter and an early-morning departure to beat the campsite traffic.
